What are infotainment services ?

International Original Equipment Manufacturers like cars or PC makers want their devices to be 24/7 worldwide connected (2G/3G/4G and soon 5G)  via a VPN to their Information System (Business Services) providing:

  • the capability to update to the last firmware (Firmware Over The Air)
  • a realtime failure prediction capability based on tens of onboarded sensors
  • a realtime emergency process in case of an accident (eCall)

Above this business layer and based on the same IOT SIM (eUICC), OEM also need to provide Infotainment services to their customers:

  • Onboard WiFi Hotspot
  • Google Automotive Services (Maps, YouTube, …)
  • Embedded Applications (Spotify, Deezer, Electric Charger Locator, …)

These infotainment services can be delivered to the OEM Customers (that can be individuals or companies) in different economic models:

  • B2C (Business to Consumer) when the MNO (Mobile Network Operator) directly provides the service to the Consumer
  • B2B2C (Business to Business to Consumer) when the OEM provides to its Customers the service supplied by the MNO

First mission

My first mission was to create, from scratch, the pan-european Infotainement Service in a B2C model, for a car Manufacturer, and implied to:

  • Understand and comply with all the local laws and regulation (Electronics Consumer Services, local taxes, lawfull requisitions, forbidden websites, …) and legal constraints (Terms and Conditions, Right of Withdrawal, Privacy Policy,
  • Define an end-to-end user journey starting from the first OEM contact to the service support
  • Design and develop a dedicated Portal (Authentication, Device Registration, Activation, Offers Management, Payment, …)
  • Design and implement all required processes (Acquisition, Cancellation, RGPD, Invoicing, Accounting, …)
  • Train support teams

Second mission

Infotainment Services over Business Service became mandatory, every OEM being more and more demanding about features, so a team of IOT Project Managers was created to handle the increasing project amount.

So my second mission was to support Project Managers and coordinate projects:

  • Train and support Project Managers
  • Manage the IOT Infotainment Program, overseeing every Project
  • Improve the existing Infotainment Product to meet OEM requirements while building a consistent service (tailor made vs off-the-shelf)

Third Mission

As the service was more mature the marketing took responsability to finalize it as a product and the project managers were autonomous.

My third mission was then, with the presales team, to design the customized and innovative part of the response to OEM’s RFP (Request for Proposal):

  • The infotainment product is not yet fully « productized » and is not known by sales forces I’m the favourite interface to design the OEM’s Infotainment solution
  • The OEM always require new features and new complex configurations to be studied with each technology expert
  • The global response but be consistent and must comply with the marketing route
